    Born in Adelaide, Michael Ryan originally started his career in chemistry before taking a left turn into culinary arts, where he has since made a name as one of Australia’s most respected chefs. After stints at iconic Adelaide restaurants Mona Lisa’s Bistro, The Melting Pot and The Star of Greece, he became head chef at the Milawa Cheese Factory in Victoria where he won a chef’s hat from The Age Good Food Guide in 2005. In 2006 he opened his first restaurant, Range, in Victoria with partner Jeanette Henderson, which won two hats from The Age Good Food Guide as well as the 2008 Country Restaurant of the Year award. In 2009 the pair opened Provenance in Beechworth, Victoria, which has since gone on to receive two hats every year from The Age Good Food Guide. In 2013 Provenance won Best Regional Restaurant, and Ryan was named Chef of the Year. Ryan and Henderson are now also partners in Yama Kitchen and Bar in Mt Hotham.

    Ryan’s Mediterranean inspired Long Lunch will pay tribute to his first culinary mentor, the late Brigita Turniski, former head chef at Mona Lisa’s Bistro on Hutt Street.

    “Whilst my direction of cooking has certainly changed from my early days - Japan is my muse now - the basics of cooking that I learnt from Brigita are still with me. From Brigita, I learned how to cook, not how to chef, and in my early career I blatantly recreated dishes I had learned from her. I am so happy to be back in Adelaide, I am going to recreate some of Brigita’s dishes, dishes that I have always remembered. Her knowledge of the food of the Levant and Turkey, and the Mediterranean was extensive. It is food designed to share, perfect for this event,” – Michael Ryan
