The 1966 Adelaide Festival was held from Thursday, March 10 to Saturday, March 26 and programmed by a committee consisting of Robert Campbell, BLD Coughlan, John Horner and CJ Glover (chair).

Adelaide Festival patron, the Queen Mother, visited during the second week attending Flower Day celebrations, a performance of the Australian Ballet at Her Majesty's Theatre, a concert by the Australian Youth Orchestra and the final variety show at Elder Park.

Other highlights included the glorious spectacle of The Royal Hunt of the Sun, Dame Judith Anderson performing four classical drama recitals, the Berlioz Requiem, the London Symphony Orchestra, Die Kammermusiker of Switzerland, Yevgeny Yevushenko at Adelaide Writers' Week, the Kalakshetra Dancers from Madras, Harold Lang's Voyage Theatre and the New Zealand Opera Company's production of Porgy and Bess.
