Adelaide Festival 2026 Delivers $40.8 Million Boost for South Australia

This year’s Adelaide Festival captivated audiences from interstate, overseas and across South Australia. Over 17 action-packed days and nights, over 100 performances from 703 artists took place within 20 different South Australian venues and performance spaces, continuing Adelaide Festival’s tradition as Australia’s premier international arts festival.

The success of the 2026 Festival demonstrated Adelaide Festival’s continuing, significant impact on the State’s economy, driving an estimated $40.8 million in gross expenditure for the South Australian economy, generating $29.1 million of new expenditure for the State.

A major tourism drawcard, Adelaide Festival 2026 attracted an estimated 188,236 attendances across its diverse program (including WOMADelaide) of which 31,655 festival attendances were from interstate and international visitors. 33% of all ticket sales went to interstate or overseas audiences.

Marking the first festival under the leadership of Artistic Director Matthew Lutton OAM and Executive Director Julian Hobba, the 2026 program brought together acclaimed artists and companies from Australia and the world, presenting ambitious and inspiring works at the forefront of contemporary artistic practice.

Adelaide Festival 2026 opened with an unforgettable free concert by British indie rock icons Pulp in Elder Park, drawing a crowd of 10,000 people and transforming the heart of Adelaide into a vibrant celebration of music and community. The following days and nights showcased an impressive array of the most virtuosic and transformational international and local live performance, including the critically acclaimed Pygmalion Ensemble who delivered three sublime programs of early Baroque music, the masterful theatrical marathon Gatz by Elevator Repair Service, and the heart-pumping Theatre of Dreams by Hofesh Shechter Company on the closing weekend.

In addition to the Festival’s $29.2 million net impact on Gross State Product, the event’s success created the equivalent of 194 full-time jobs and supported additional event roles for an estimated 154 people, underscoring the important role that Adelaide Festival plays in the cultural infrastructure of South Australia. Audiences that journeyed to Adelaide from interstate and overseas spent generously – on average $5,198 each during their visit – and contributed to more than 60,000 total bed nights. Adelaide Festival 2026 once again demonstrated its ability to attract visitors, support local businesses and strengthen South Australia’s reputation as a premier cultural destination, with 94% of visitors surveyed stating that they were satisfied or very satisfied with their visit to South Australia.

Minister for Arts Kyam Maher MLC said: “The Adelaide Festival is a nationally and internationally significant event and these results demonstrate why. The Adelaide Festival plays an important role in South Australia’s status as an international arts and culture hub. The Government looks forward to the Festival’s continued success and the 2027 season.”

Adelaide Festival Chair Judy Potter
said: “Adelaide Festival delivered another marvellous artistic program in 2026 and once again demonstrated the Festival’s extraordinary economic and cultural value to our state. I’d like to thank the wonderful artists, companies and the hardworking festival team that deliver such a dynamic and diverse program year after year.”

“We are also extremely grateful to all our partners, donors, ticket buyers, Festival Friends, volunteers and the South Australian Government, whose support is critical to the successful delivery of Australia’s premier international arts festival.”

Adelaide Festival Executive Director Julian Hobba
said: “The economic impact figures for the 2026 Festival reinforce what has been long known and amply demonstrated: investment in arts and culture is one of the most effective ways to stimulate economic activity.”

“Adelaide Festival generates visitor spending across accommodation, hospitality, retail and transport, while also creating jobs, attracting talent and strengthening South Australia's reputation as a destination of choice. Few public investments deliver benefits across so many sectors at once.”
