il Pomo d'Oro

Step inside the bustling world of 17th-century Venice, a cosmopolitan meeting place of trade, culture and music. As Vivaldi composes a new concerto for cello, sounds and influences from the Middle East and Asia flow through the city’s waterways and marketplaces. In Al-Bunduqiyya (Venice in Arabic), il Pomo d’Oro and cellist Giovanni Sollima imagine how this concerto might have unfolded had Vivaldi lived to complete it. This is the lost concerto of Venice, reimagined and found anew.

One of Europe’s most dynamic baroque ensembles, il Pomo d’Oro makes its Australian debut with a program featuring two extraordinary soloists, exclusively for Adelaide Festival. The prolific and multi-award-winning period-instrument ensemble will be joined by virtuosic cellist Giovanni Sollima and organist Cameron Carpenter for two dynamic programs during its Festival residency. Named after the splendour-steeped opera by Antonio Cesti (‘the golden apple’), il Pomo d’Oro’s performances encompass all there is to love about baroque repertoire. After bringing Pygmalion Ensemble for its Australian debut in 2026, we are thrilled to introduce you to the virtuosic exuberance of il Pomo d’Oro.

il Pomo d'Oro will also be performing in Bach Organ Concertos.

Giovanni Sollima is an internationally renowned cellist and composer whose adventurous musical world moves freely across genres and traditions. A compelling and virtuosic performer, he has collaborated with artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Riccardo Muti, Viktoria Mullova and Patti Smith, and with leading orchestras around the world. Sollima’s restless curiosity has seen him explore ancient, eastern and electric instruments, perform in the Sahara Desert and underwater, and even play a cello made of ice. His research has also brought renewed attention to 18th-century cellist-composer Giovanni Battista Costanzi. Sollima recently joined forces with il Pomo d’Oro for the album Al-Bunduqiyya: The Lost Concerto, exploring the rich musical connections between Venice and the Mediterranean.

il Pomo d’Oro is one of the world’s leading period-instrument ensembles, celebrated for its dynamic and authentic interpretations of Baroque and Classical repertoire. Founded in 2012, the ensemble brings together outstanding specialists in historically informed performance and has built an impressive international touring and recording career, with more than 40 recordings, many award-winning. Alongside many of the world’s foremost conductors and soloists, regular collaborators include Joyce DiDonato, Jakub Józef Orliński and Giovanni Sollima. Combining stylistic brilliance and irresistible energy, il Pomo d’Oro has become a thrilling presence on concert stages around the world.
