AUSTRALIA & SPAIN

Where Arnhem Land and Catalonia meet.

Iconic songman and ceremony leader Ngulmiya Nundhirribala is renowned for forging extraordinary musical collaborations from his home among the remote sand dunes of Numbulwar, Arnhem Land. In his latest album, Catalunya, he brings together the ancient song traditions of Arnhem Land and the passionate flamenco music of Catalonia, Spain.

At the heart of this captivating performance is the remarkable meeting of Ngulmiya’s powerful vocals and the virtuosic artistry of flamenco guitarist Pau Figueres. Joined by Ngulmiya’s son Nayurryurr Nundhirribala (vocals and lhambilgbilg), along with Francis Diatschenko (acoustic guitar) and Anthony Gray (bass ukulele), they weave stories of family, Country and culture into a rich and evocative musical dialogue that spans traditions and continents.

“Owner of a voice capable of making you leave your body”

Mundo Sonoro

Ngulmiya Nundhirribala is a force of nature from the remote traditional Arnhem Land coast in northern Australia. His singing, stories, dancing and music have left audiences across Asia and Europe in tears as he shares his family’s history and future through songs that have developed over thousands of years. His award winning debut album Ngulmiya recorded with the Budapest Art Orchestra, was given a 5 star review by Songlines Magazine UK.

Ngulmiya is an iconic and highly respected Songman and Ceremony leader. Ngulmiya’s traditional singing style has developed mainly in isolation, with later influence from the Makassan traders from SE Asia. He has an incredible ability to improvise and collaborate using his traditional vocal style and language. His stunning virtuosic singing ranges from pure beauty, to soul stirring calls to his ancestors, to evocative god-like power and raw emotion.

Pau Figueres embraces and shatters flamenco. He makes it his own. He does not flaunt his technique; instead, he dispenses it in brief, intense bursts of brilliance. He has it all: extraordinary speed, explosive energy, impeccable tempo, precision, clarity, and beauty. He does not boast of his genius, yet he does not hide it either. He gives exactly the right amount. And, like all great musicians, he sounds like himself—he is unlike anything else.
