Andrea Hirata

Indonesia

Andrea Hirata was born in the small village of Gantong in Belitong, East Sumatra. After completing his graduate studies in economic theory at Sheffield Hallam University, UK, he returned to live in Indonesia. In 2004 Hirata was a tsunami disaster relief volunteer in Aceh and seeing the devastation it wrought prompted him to write an autobiographic novel about his childhood. The book, recently translated into English, is The Rainbow Troops. Though never intended for mainstream publication the book has now sold over 5 million copies in Indonesia alone, and has been adapted for a feature film, television series, and musical theatre.
