  • About

“Someone is blowing in your ear, and it isn’t anybody in your immediate vicinity. You can feel this distant person’s breath (hot) and his urgency (hotter), and the sound of him is all over the place – behind you, before you, to either side of you, close and distant, shouting and whispering, sometimes in several voices at once” The New York Times

Following acclaimed runs in London, Edinburgh, on Broadway and beyond, The Encounter comes to Adelaide.

Renowned UK theatre company Complicite’s latest piece is based on the compelling true experiences of a National Geographic photographer who found himself lost amongst the remote people of the Javari Valley in the Amazon. It was an encounter that changed his life: bringing the limits of human consciousness into startling focus.

As McIntyre’s mesmerising tale reaches its climax, this extraordinary performance asks some of the most urgent questions of today: about how we live and what we believe to be true. Using binaural technology (3D audio) to build an intimate and shifting world of stunningly real sound, this is an extraordinary theatrical event.

“Completely transporting... a gripping thriller... sensational”

Variety

"A sensuous, immersive foray into sound, and an experiment in time-bending and mind-melding"

Sunday Times

"Masterful storytelling from a man and a company who are incapable of remaining within known theatrical boundaries. A must-see – or perhaps I should say, a must-hear"

The Independent
