The Rise of Independent Media description
With over half a million Australians joining Kevin Rudd’s call for a Royal Commission into News Corp and the concentration of media power in this country, Australians are increasingly turning to other, more independent outlets for their news. Editor-in-Chief of veteran online newsletter Crikey! Peter Fray, independent journalist and media analyst Margaret Simons and founder of michaelwest.com.au, business writer Michael West discuss the rise of independent media and what we gain – and lose – from the increased proliferation of new media.
Peter Fray is the Editor in Chief of Crikey and the managing editor of Private Media, the publisher of SmartCompany, The Mandarin and Crikey. He has previously been the Editor in Chief of the Sydney Morning Herald, the Editor of the Sunday Age and the Canberra Times and the deputy editor of The Australian and the Sun-Herald. He is also the founder of Australia's first dedicated fact-checking site, PolitiFact Australia, and prior to joining Crikey, was a Professor of Journalism Practice at University of Technology Sydney.
Margaret Simons is an award-winning journalist and the author of thirteen books, including biographies of Malcolm Fraser and Penny Wong. She won the 2015 Walkley Award for Social Equity Journalism and has been honoured with several Quill Awards for journalistic excellence.
Michael West spent two decades working as a journalist, stockbroker, editor and finance commentator before striking out on his own in July 2016. After eight years as a commentator with The Australian and another eight years with the Sydney Morning Herald as a journalist and editor, Michael founded website michaelwest.com.au to focus on journalism of high public interest. Michael is a Walkley award-winner and Adjunct Professor at the University of Sydney’s School of Social and Political Sciences.
David Washington is the Editorial Director of Solstice Media and editor of InDaily and writes on topics as diverse as politics, football, science and agriculture. He began his career in journalism nearly 25 years ago and has been a federal political reporter, food writer, public servant and small business operator.
